Turn off all lights

Stereos, and other electrical equipment when you're not using them.

Turn the heat down or the air conditioning up a few degrees while you sleep and before you leave home for the day.

If you have access to your hot water heater, keep the temperature at 110 ° F ( 43 ° C). You'll still enjoy steamy showers, but you'll have a lower energy bill.

Install aerators in all your faucets and a low-flow showerhead to reduce the amount or water you use.

These are inexpensive and easy to install. Just be sure to choose a good brand that guarantees decent water pressure. If it doesn't deliver, return it.

Winter energy saving

If you've got a window-unit air conditioner, wrap it in plastic and seal the edges with duct tape. This will keep warm air from leaking out around it.

Weather-strip your windows

Weather-stripping is a modern plastic creation available at all hardware stores. It seals the cracks around windows where air can sneak in or out. Make sure the surface where you want to apply it are clean and dry and that it's at least 20 ° F (-7 ° F) out, then follow the directions on the product's box.

IF your home is especially drafty

seal entire windows with clear plastic sold at hardware store and home centers for this purpose. First, clean and dry the molding around your window. Next, apply a line of double-sided tape along the entire window frame. Press the plastic wrap firmly to the tape, coving the entire window.

The plastic will wrinkle; don't worry about it. Finally, use a hair dryer on its highest setting and blow hot air evenly over the entire coving. The hot air will shrink the plastic wrap, sealing your window completely. At the end of the season, remove the plastic and the tape.
